Why are signs from the otherside important?
To some people signs from loved ones after death aren’t important. Everyone has their own reasons but it could be that they don’t believe in signs, they fear the afterlife, or it just doesn’t resonate as a comfort.
How people deal with grief is down to the individual as it’s a very personal thing, effected by all manner of influences. So while some don’t need or want signs from loved ones after death there are those who desperately need communication from spirit.
Most commonly, the reasons are to feel connected, feel part of something more, for guidance, and for comfort.
When someone has passed away, and it may not even be recent, there can be an overwhelming yearning to feel the presence of, or connection with, a lost loved one. You want to know that they are OK, know that you’re OK and to find comfort and peace. The feeling of missing someone and grieving for their loss can create a deep feeling of sadness and lonliness that can only be lightened by moments of knowing that they are still around.
For those that have lost direction, feel stuck or alone, just knowing that spirit guides or spirit in general are around can give a sense of feeling less alone. Signs are affirmation that there’s a higher force supporting them or that there is something bigger to the meaning of everything.
Common signs from loved ones after death
Messages from the other side can be whatever you ask them to be. In my blog “are they OK?” I give an example of an unusual sign that I asked for when I was at a cross roads.
However, signs can just appear without you thinking about it, or expecting it. The most common signs are feathers, Robins, Red Cardinals, favourite songs playing, songs with poignant lyrics playing, vivid dreams, and repeating numbers
Feathers
Feathers are seen as spiritual signs in many cultures and religions. They are a sign of transcendence and protection.
Seeing a feather means that angels or a loved one is watching over you. It’s supposed to be a message of comfort and support – and to be honest – a fluffy feather represents a light, angelic, comfort from above just in its nature. Just think about what a feather signifies to you or how it makes you feel. Pillows, doves, angels….
However, if you have a fear of birds, it’s most unlikely that you will receive a feather from the other side as a sign of comfort and love. It won’t be one of your signs from loved ones after death. Your best bet is to turn on the radio, or to go into a nice dreamy sleep.

Red Cardinals
I haven't seen a red cardinal as they are not native to the UK, or anywhere on my travels. During a mediumship Zoom class a North American lady got really excited that a Red Cardinal had just landed in the tree outside her window.
She was excitedly shrieking about it, while the rest of us just looked at the screen blankly. This went on until the teacher said,”yeh, I’m sorry, I don’t know what a Red Cardinal is”.
This was where I learnt about the relevance of the Red Cardinal in spirituality. Cardinals are said to appear as a reminder of lost loved ones and signs from loved ones after death. Native Indians believe that they are a sign of renewal and transformation.
I think that the renewal and transformation could be interpreted by you as to how it resonates in that moment. It could be the loved one’s renewal and transformation as they transition into the afterlife. The message could be one of change for you.
A Red Cardinal is very striking in appearance and brings a feeling of immense joy, happiness and emotion. It’s also believed that it is a spirit looking to connect with our earthly plane.

Robins
The robin, with its vibrant red breast is much more familiar to our UK back gardens. It is also the poster bird for pretty much nearly every Christmas card that you see.
Robin’s colour and cheerful song, is a symbol of hope, renewal, and the cycle of life. Its presence in our gardens and parks is a gentle reminder that even in the darkest of times, the promise of new beginnings and a splash of colour is always near.
To most, the Robin seems to be one of the simplest pleasures in life. If you think about it, it’s rare for someone not to shout, “Look, there’s a Robin”, or “I saw a Robin today”. My mum goes mad for a Robin. I remember her telling me once that it’s my grandad, so a Robin is still always my grandad to me.
Songs on the radio or on your random playlist
Songs can be a powerful way for the spirit world to communicate with us. The melodies, lyrics, and emotions evoked by music have the ability to stike a loud chord (pun intented).
When a certain song resonates deeply within us, it may be a sign that a higher power or loved one is trying to send us a message or guidance.
The spirit world can use music to uplift our mood and mindset, provide comfort, or reveal a truth or direction. Paying attention to the songs that play at a poignant or random moment, and that move us, can be a way to receive messages from spirit.
Vivid dreams
Vivid dreams can be a powerful way for our spiritual guides, higher selves, and loved ones to communicate with us. They could even indicate that you’re a night worker, but that’s for another time.
Dreams are known to exist on another level of consciousness. They help us connect with intuition, gain insights, and make spiritual connections with departed loved ones.
The symbols, imagery, and dialogue that arise in dreams can carry important messages and guidance. By paying attention to these dream experiences, we open ourselves up to receiving valuable information – and sometimes premonitions. It’s another way for you to have spiritual connections with departed loved ones
Keep a dream journal to record what messages or visions you’ve had. You need to be quick though! Write it all down as soon as you wake up because you will lose about 80% of your dream memory after the first five minutes of being awake.
This is where I am a bit rubbish to be honest. I’m one of those that ALWAYS thinks, oh yeh I’ll remember that and write it down later.
Could this be a message? If so, what?
Saying that, there are some dreams that I remember from a really young age, as young as two or three years old. There are reoccurring dreams that I have now or at least with the same theme.
There’s only one that I can remember that could be a kind of message. I’m in my nan’s house (but it’s not my nan’s house) and I’m climbing up stair cases and through ceilings. There are bedrooms leading on from bedrooms, and a nicely made up bedroom within a bedroom, and I pick this as my favourite. As I go up and up through the house it’s almost like it becomes a bare brick, dusty place of forgotten renovations. I’m treading carefully on boards.
This occurred for years and years from childhood to adulthood. THEN, a few years ago I went to see a friend who had inherited her childhood home, and subsequently bought the one next door. These are really old houses in a tiny village.
Well you know where this is going…. she had knocked through to next door and was stripping it all back to rafters and bare brick. The new house was now one ununiformed, mish mash of a structure. As I was going up the rabbit warren of random staircases and rooms leading to rooms, I was back in my dream! This was amazing to me. It was totally surreal!
I tried to tell her and my partner about it, but they kind of brushed it off. It’s one of those moments where you just can’t articulate how deeply profound it feels. The reason for the dismissive tone could also be because while entering one room at the top of a staircase I said, “oop, need to squeeze passed this ghost lady here. She’s wondering what we’re all doing”.
How to interpret signs of communication
Tune into your intuition. What do you feel and sense that you are being told? What emotions, feelings and senses did you get from that song, sighting or tune.
And here's the biggie again. Keep a journal of the signs and those emotions, feelings and senses.
You might think this answer is obvious, but staying disciplined makes it difficult to put into practice. Believe me, you will forget if you don’t write it all down. You’ll find it a surprise what’s to be found each time journal entries are read back, and it often stirs emotions inside that are needed at different times. Work out what the symbols mean to you.
Sudden realisation
I carried my house dream around for decades, not knowing why or what it was all about. When the dream came true, I thought it might be a sign that I was meant to form a connection with this person and become friends. It never occurred to me that the dreams could be messages from the other side.
But now I’m writing this it’s so bloomin’ obvious!
My nan is my spirit guide and a super strong one, especially when it comes to my development. She appears in every reading I have, every course I go on and the energy is massive. It makes people get really powerfully emotional. My nan is teaching me things about my abilities – so it’s as clear as day – it was a lesson into premonition.
It wasn’t ever going to be scary, because that’s not who my nan is. She would never traumatise me. It had to be sufficiently odd, repetitive and yet kind of harmless in order to stick in my brain. Then this visit to the house happened just as I was fresh into my development journey. Lockdown had ended and off for a visit I went.
Using your intuition and immersing yourself in writing really does help! I felt her over my shoulder breathing a sigh of relief and then there was a build of pride and excitement. Again, I am unable to articulate how profound a moment this is.
When to seek guidance
If you’re struggling to work out what the signs mean then that’s the time to speak to a psychic or a medium. Friends, books and the internet can give you an interpretation, but it’s not necessarily YOU’RE interpretation.
Some signs will be so easy to interpret, like a feather – that could be instant recognition. Others can be much more difficult, especially when your own mind (or ego) takes over. If you’re an overthinker, that’s worse still and all of the different sources of opinion won’t help on that score. Maybe it’s just too random to decipher like my odd house dream. If you’re overwhelmed or your thoughts and life feel like tangled spaghetti, sometimes you just need some reliable clarity.
If journaling and your own intuition doesn’t help as a solution to interpreting signs from loved ones after death, or your spirit team, then you know where I am. You can also contact me for a reading if you are unsure as to whether your are receiving signs from loved ones at all.
